A stunning Hermès Appaloosa Des Steppes Scarf is the prize for the Liberatti March competition. The beautiful patterns and stylized rendition of an Appaloosa horse have been inspired by the artisans of Kyrgyzstan on the Silk Road.
Kyrgyzstan Art (top) and Yurt
The beautiful Hermès Appaloosa scarf, unfolds another story beyond its spectacular colour and motif. This is story of scientific discovery and a journey of gutsy determination to resolve the argument about the origins of the Appaloosa breed.

Legends of the West place the Appaloosa with the Spanish during their exploration and settlement of the American continent in 15th Century. But there is another theory; the Appaloosa arrived in North America 13,000 years ago, by crossing the once land bridge between Siberia and Alaska.
The upending of the North American ‘origins theory’ for the Appaloosa is revealed in the award winning 2015 documentary film, the Secret Horse: Quest for the True Appaloosa. Produced by ‘Around the World in 80 Trades,’ Conor Woodman, the documentary tells the story of New Zealand foundation Appaloosa breeder Scott Engstrom. At 69 Engstrom travels to Kyrgyzstan to prove her theory that the Appaloosa, had travelled across the once ‘land bridge’ from Europe to North America. Using DNA has been proven rightn Siberia and Alaska.
The bond between humanity and horse has been heralded in folklore, film and music; the Ghost Wind Stallion, War Horse, Wild Fire, Black Beauty and even the popular Mr Ed.
So little wonder that the artists at Hermès were similarly inspired to create the Appaloosa des Steppes.
